Coquille Shocks Heppner In 2A Semifinals

McMINNVILLE – The 2A semifinal game pitting Coquille against Heppner had plenty of defense. The game also had one team able to convert the extra points after a score and that was the difference. In a shocker, Coquille downed Heppner, 8-6 on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Wortman Stadium.

The Red Devils and Mustangs played three quarters of scoreless football. Midway through the fourth, Heppner started on a 8-play, 65-yard drive culminating with an 8-yard pass from Derrick Smith to Landon Mitchell for the score. More importantly, the attempt for the point after failed.

Coquille responded with a drive of their own. Marching 78 yards in 9 plays, the Red Devils went on the board with a 7-yard run by Gunner Yates. The difference in the game was the run by Brock Willis for the point after, providing Coquille the 8-6 lead and the ultimate win.

The Red Devil defense held the Mustangs to only 141 yards of total offense, unheard of for a Heppner offense. More importantly, Coquille controlled the clock, keeping the Heppner offense off the field. The Red Devils held the time of possession advantage in three of the four quarters.

Caden George had nine carries for 54 yards to lead the Heppner ground game. Brock Hisler ended his day with 12 carries for 39 yards. Mitchell was 5-for-8 passing for 53 yards and the lone score. Karson Cimmiyotti was the recipient of two of those passes for 45 yards.
