VALE – Sometimes, everything just falls into place. For Vale senior Trevor Stewart, a stellar high school running career and a lifelong love of fish came together as the Viking will continue both his running and a career involving freshwater fish studies at Cal Poly Humboldt University in Arcata, California.

Stewart gathered a large group of friends, family and teammates in a formal signing on Thursday, April 12 in the foyer of Vale High School.

“The school has a fantastic fisheries program and I really liked the smaller size of the school and the town,” Stewart said after singing his name. “There is a hatchery right on campus and I was impressed on my visit to the college.”

The Lumberjacks will have the 3A/2A/1A state cross country champion on the team in the fall after Stewart completed the 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 18.9 seconds.

The Viking senior is looking to add an additional state title or two in the current track and field season where Stewart has yet to finish below first place in an individual race.

“The Vale coaching staff encourage the athletes to find a college that fits their needs and then do sports there,” said Vale track and field coach Paul Bentz. “Trevor found Humboldt all on his own. We are excited and happy for him.”

The “Jacks” compete in the NCAA Division II, taking part in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

“Humboldt is a perfect fit for Trevor, a program where he will be pushed,” Bentz said.

When not training, Stewart may be found in the on-campus fish hatchery or on the college owned ocean vessel while at Humboldt. The Jacks have the lone Fisheries Biology program in California and if Stewart chooses to continue, a Masters degree in Fisheries.
