NYSSA – With the continuing growth of women in wrestling, the Calhoun Classic also needed expansion. For the majority of Saturday, December 14, two mats were exclusively female wrestling. And by the end of the day, the host Nyssa team laid claim to second place in the team standings.
The Bulldogs scored 104 points, just eight points behind team victors, Caldwell. The Vale team claimed fifth in the standings, one spot ahead of the combined team of Baker and Powder Valley. Echo/Stanfield finished the tournament in the ninth slot.
In a match for the local fans, Nyssa’s Yisella Torres pinned Vale’s Alexis Cleaver in the final round for the 115-pound division. At 145 pounds, Vale’s Tyler Richardson picked up the lone championship for the Vikings, pinning Payette’s Miah Garcia at the 1 minute, 51 second mark.
At 155 pounds, the championship match was all Ontario. Seeing each other daily at practice, Maria Diaz pinned teammate Ashley Cano for the title. The all Ontario matchup again showed up at 235 pounds as Abby Osei pinned Maritza Gonzalez in an all Ontario showdown for the title.
Baker/Powder Valley also took home an individual title as Bailey Cole pinned Ontario’s Naidalin Cancho for the medal in the 190-pound class.
