NYSSA – The second seeded Nyssa girls’ basketball team made quick work of 15th seeded Clatskanie on Saturday, Feb. 26, cruising to a 68-41 win and making motel reservations for quarterfinal play in Coos Bay.

The Bulldogs scored the first 16 points of the game starting off with a basket off a rebound by Gracie Johnson. The Tigers finally scored at the 2 minute, 43 second mark in the first quarter as Maya Helman connected on a long three-pointer.

The scoring continued for the Dawgs and at the half, Nyssa led 41-16. The Bulldogs played the majority of the second half with the starters on the bench with the game going under the mercy rule at the start of the fourth quarter.

“We ran out transition offense really well tonight,” said Nyssa senior Malerie Long. “I think we took full opportunities on both offense and defense and our posts were amazing on the rebounds.”

Long’s comments are especially telling as Johnson led all scorers with 25 points, the majority of those coming off offensive rebounds. Clarita Arizmendi added 10 points while eight Nyssa players scored in the victory.

For Clatskanie, Maya Helman put in 19 points for the Tigers. Kylie Thomas added 14 points.

“I was very happy with the way the girls were focused right out of the gate,” said Nyssa coach Jeremy Chamberlain. “I was concerned about being rusty after such a long time off, but that did not seem to be a problem.”

The score allowed Chamberlain a chance to see his bench in action and rest his starters for the upcoming quarterfinals.

“I thought our bench did a very good job of maintaining when they came in,” he said. “Clatskanie has some good guards and they did a good job of scoring. The difference in the game was out post play. We did a good job of controlling the boards on both ends which led to many second chance opportunities to score.”
