Will a loss to Burns translate to a Baker state title?

BAKER – If history does indeed repeat itself, the Baker girls’ basketball team is headed for a repeat state title. Last season, the Bulldogs girls went 25-1, culminating in a 51-48 victory over Marist Catholic in the state final game. The one blemish on the record–a 61-46 loss to the Burns Hilanders.

After starting 6-0 this year, the Lady Bulldogs once again endured a Burns game on Tuesday, December 17 in Baker. The result–a 47-46 victory for the visiting Hilanders.

Burns jumped out to an early 12-6 first quarter lead. The second quarter saw the Bulldogs back into game, outscoring the Hilanders 15-7 and entering the locker room for the half, Baker led 21-19.

Burns roared out in the third quarter, putting up 19 points and finished the win with a 9-point fourth quarter. Baker struggled in the third quarter, adding 11 points to the score before making the game close with a 15-point final quarter.

For the Hilanders, junior Allie Hueckman led in the win with 16 points. Junior Aundraya Ceja added 10 points and Alicyn Hoke ended her night with eight points.

For Baker, only four players added points to the scoreboard. Senior Sydney Younger led all scorers in the game with 18 points. Freshman Jozie Kamos had 14 points.

Baker (6-1 overall) now will be in Gladstone on Friday, December 20 to take part in the Gladstone Holiday Tournament. The Bulldogs will open the tournament with a game versus the host Gladstone Gladiators (1-3 overall).

Burns (6-1 overall) hosts Grant Union (2-4 overall) on Thursday and La Pine (5-1 overall) on Friday.
