Vale’s Collins and Ontario’s Hernandez Victorious At Calhoun Classic

NYSSA – After a huge contingent of female wrestlers finished up action on the mats at the Calhoun Classic, Vale’s Ava Collins and Ontario’s Hannah Hernandez headed home with some hardware.

Collins took the championship in the 145-pound class, taking a 9-3 decision over Boise High School’s Clare Waite. In the same division, host Bulldog Monica Ibanez picked up third place.

At 155 pounds, Hernandez had the most exciting match of the day, taking the title only after an overtime period versus Boise’s Ornella Kero. With time ticking down in overtime, Hernandez was able to take a 5-4 win.

In their first year as a program, the Four Rivers Falcons made quite a showing led by a second place showing by Lacatia Mason wrestling at 105 pounds. At 190 pounds, Kianna Newberry placed fourth.

In addition to Collins winning for the Vikings, Jaycie Hackler placed fourth at 115 pounds and Jessica Williams also picked up fourth wrestling in the 155-pound division.

145: 1st Place Match; Ava Collins (Vale) over Clare Waite (Boise) by decision, 9-3. 3rd Place Match; Monica Ibanez (Nyssa) over Angela Aviles (Vallivue) by fall, 2:14.

155: 1st Place Match; Hannah Hernandez (Ontario) in overtime over Ornella Kero (Boise), 5-4. 3rd Place Match; Zoe Fries (Kuna) over Jessica Williams (Vale) by decision, 2-1.

190: 3rd Place Match; Alexis DeAlba (Boise) over Kianna Newberry (Four Rivers) by fall, 0:55.
