VALE – After holding Nyssa scoreless and taking an easy win just the week previous, the Ontario football team was looking to make it two county wins in a row as the Tigers traveled to Vale on Friday, Sept. 13.
The Vikings had other plans.
Trailing briefly only once early, Vale again used a punishing ground game combined with a defense that held the Tigers to only 39 yards in the second half to open the home season with a 62-10 nonleague victory.
Vale senior Kase Schaffeld had Vale on the board early, scoring one of his three touchdowns on the night with a two-yard run with 8 minutes, 49 seconds showing in the first quarter. Ontario responded on the ensuing kickoff as Zach Bolen returned the ball back to the endzone for the Tiger’s lone touchdown of the night.
Off a Vale fumble, the Tigers held their lone lead of the game at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter after a successful field goal. The Vikings took back the game scoreboard for good with 2:54 left in the first quarter off a 29-yard catch and run by junior Canon Hiatt. With the first quarter played, the Vikings led 16-10.
The two teams entered the locker room at halftime with the Vikings holding a 38-10 advantage after a 22-point second quarter onslaught.
For the game, Vale came up just short of a 500-yard offensive showing, finishing with 491 yards. The ground game accounted for 355 yards while the ball went through the air for 136 yards.
Schaffeld was again the leader for the Vikings, handling the ball 17 times for 116 yards and three trips to the endzone. Landon Haberman finished with eight carries for 107 yards and one score.
Vale senior quarterback Brooks Aldred finished 6-for-11 for 103 yards and a score on a quarterback run from the one. In a good sign for the future, freshman quarterback Cal Johnson saw some action, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 for 33 yards. Between the two quarterbacks, the Vikings shared the receiving yards among eight receivers led by Hiatt and Skyler Cade, both with two receptions.
In the loss, Ontario was held to 119 yards of total offense with 80 coming in the first half of play. The ground game struggled against the Viking defensive front, showing just 30 yards on 15 carries. Tiger quarterback Diego Rodriguez wrapped up his night 12-for-29 for 83 yards and an interception.
The officials for the night were relatively quiet with Ontario picking up four penalties for 35 yards and Vale seeing just six flags for 44 yards, a vast improvement over last week’s performance.
