VALE – In a game played under the “mercy rule” the entire final quarter of play, the Vale football team blasted through the first round of the 3A state football tournament with a 56-14 victory over the South Umpqua Lancers on Saturday, Nov. 9 on the Viking home field.

The Vikings led at the half 28-14, coming out for a 21-point third quarter to place the game comfortably out of reach with the mercy rule implemented late in the third quarter.

Offensively for the Vikings, Kase Schaffeld had an early day after 24 carries totaling 167 yards and four scores. The Vale senior also tacked on 15 yards on a punt return for a total of 182 all-purpose yards.

Senior Landon Haberman picked up one trip to the endzone in his 79 yards rushing on nine touches of the ball. The Vikings ended the game with 384 yards of offense, 311 of those coming off the ground game.

The Lancers could not find an answer to the Viking defense with South Umpqua held to 13 yards of total offense in the second half. South Umpqua was held to 144 yards of total offense for the game.

The victory advances Vale to quarterfinal play and due to Vale’s ranking, a second home game in the playoff picture. #4 Vale hosts #5 Taft on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a 1 p.m. kickoff scheduled.

The Tigers make the trip from Lincoln City to Vale after a 34-27 win over Sisters in round one play. Taft will bring some beef to the quarterfinal game with seven players on the roster tipping the scales at 235 pounds or bigger. The Sisters/Taft first round matchup was a repeat of an earlier season game, one that saw Sisters take a 42-22 win.
