MILTON -FREEWATER – Even with a 69-7 win over the McLoughlin Pioneers on Friday, Oct. 25, the undefeated Vale football team slid one spot in the all important OSAA rankings with the Vikings now sitting fourth behind Cascade Christian, Banks and top seeded Siuslaw/Mapleton.
On the road to Milton-Freewater and facing the two victory Pioneers, Vale stayed with what has propelled the team to no losses, running the ball 19 times in the game. After two weeks away from competition, senior Kase Schaffeld showed the layoff had no effect, carrying the ball only four times, scoring on two of those and picking up 102 yards, a 25.5-yard average per carry.
Senior Landon Haberman also picked up two scores rushing, handling the ball only three times for 101 yards. Nine Vikings contributed to the 315-yard ground game with the Vikings only completing three passes for 42 yards.
The stingy Vale defense held the Pioneers to the lone score in the fourth quarter and only 196 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback Randall Montgomery completed 17 of 31 passes for 136 and no interceptions. Sophomore Dallen Duncan grabbed six catches for 39 yards to lead MacHi while sophomore Daxsen Alexander-Romero finished with five catches for 38 yards.
As the score shows, the Vikings never punted the entire night. The Vikings vastly improved in the penalties department over previous games, picking up only a single flag for a measly five yards. The Pioneers also added to the officials not having much to do, seeing two penalties for 10 yards.
