VALE – The Vale girls basketball team is now a top five 3A squad after a 44-20 victory over 4A La Grande on Friday, Dec. 15 in the Viking gym.
The Viking girls rose from 10th to fifth in the current OSAA basketball rankings. Even with the loss, the Lady Tigers dropped only a single spot, falling to sixth in the 4A rankings.
It took just over one minute for Vale to go on the board with Hailey Cleaver hitting from beyond the arc at the 6 minute, 58 second mark to place the Vikings up 3-0. The Lady Vikings put up nine points before La Grande’s Rowan Evans sank a free throw at the 2:53 mark. Vale led after the first quarter 14-6 with four of the Tiger’s six points coming at the free throw line.
The second quarter was sluggish for both teams as Vale added two points to their total and the Tigers added five points.
Vale outscored La Grande 12-6 in the third quarter and with the Lady Tigers only adding three points in the final quarter, the Vikings ran away with the game with 16 points in the final eight minutes.
Cleaver led Vale with 12 points while Kesley Stepleton ended her night with 10 points. Elli Jacobs followed with nine points.
For the Tigers, both Evans and Maezie Wilcox finished the game with seven points.
