VALE – Viking volleyball fans were all set for an early night and to head home early after Vale grabbed victories in the opening two sets of the team’s home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 19. However, Idaho’s Nampa Christian had other plans as the Trojans fought back from a two set deficit and claimed a 3-2 win over Vale in nonleague play.
Vale senior McKenna Justus served the Vikings an early lead in set one with Vale jumping to a 2-0 lead. The two teams then traded points back and forth with Nampa Christian taking the lead for the first time at 5-4. In a set that saw the score tied 12 times, the Vikings finally grabbed a 25-22 victory.
The second set was a copy of the first with the teams showing the same score a total of five times and the Trojans taking the lead twice in the set. The Vikings finally took the lead at the 24-23 mark and after a Nampa Christian error, won the second set by a score of 25-23.
Set three saw Nampa Christian out early with a 7-3 margin before Vale was able to fight back to a 7-7 game. The Vikings looked to end the night, leading at 17-14. The Trojans were the team to fight back this time, tying the score at 17 and scoring the next five points. Nampa Christian went on to a 25-18 win.
Vale again looked to end the night early in the fourth set, leading 10-7. After knotting up the score at 10, the Trojans took back the lead, extending it to 14-10 and forced a fifth and deciding fifth set with a 25-18 fourth set win.
In the fifth, the two teams traded points back and forth for the initial seven points. Nampa Christian then went on a run, leading 10-7 and stole the night with a 15-10 victory.
“We started out the night really strong, following our game plan and then our mindset switched and we were unable to get back to what was working,” said Vale coach Shannon Steele of the night. “I was extremely pleased with our defense and the play of our middle hitters. They really seemed to be upping their game every week.”
In the loss, the Viking offense was led by junior Ella Nieskens with 11 kills. Fellow junior Bailey King ended with nine kills and freshman Braelyn Keller added five kills.
Senior Elise Seals had 18 digs for the night while junior Teresa Gonzalez putting up 11 digs. Justus and junior Sophie Aldred each had eight digs.
Seals also served perfect on the night as did freshman Avery Schiemer. Justus ended with seven aces and King had five aces.
