VALE – Along with the classic vehicles, past graduating classes in attendance and an excited group of Homecoming court contestants, the Vale football team also squeezed in a 48-19 nonleague victory over the visiting Bulldogs of 4A Baker on Friday, Sept. 20.

Not straying from what has worked this entire season, the Vikings stayed with the ground game and a defense that held Baker to only 137 yards of total offense for the night.

Vale hit the scoreboard first, scoring on a run by senior Kase Schaffeld and converting on the two-point conversion. The Bulldogs responded with a trip to the endzone by junior Rasean Jones but a failed conversion attempt and at the end of the first quarter, the Vikings led 8-6.

Both teams added a score in the second quarter for a tight 16-15 halftime score going the way of Vale.

The homefield Vikings scored 24 points in the third quarter, adding an additional score in the fourth to place the game out of reach in the second half. Baker was limited to one score in the second half.

Vale went over the 500-yard mark for offense, ending with 506 yards of total offense led by Schaffeld’s 289 yards rushing on 29 touches of the ball and three scores. Senior Landon Haberman also saw three scores, carrying 13 times for 105 yards. The ground game accounted for 481 yards of the 506 total.

Baker junior quarterback Jake McClaughry came into the game ranked seventh throughout the state in passing with 713 total yards but was held to just 116 yards, going 14-for-26. Jones, the state’s leader in receiving yards before making the trip to Vale with 484 yards, was held to just 83 yards on nine catches by the Viking defense. The ground game never found any traction with the Bulldogs carrying 16 times for only 21 yards.

Jones did outrace the Vale coverage on two kickoffs for a pair of touchdowns.

Sitting with a perfect 4-0 standing, Vale remains outside the top five in the official OSAA rankings. After the weekend’s action, the Vikings currently sit sixth while Special District 6 foe Burns grabs the top spot in the official standings. Banks ranks second with Siuslaw/Mapleton in third and Sutherlin in fourth. Santiam Christian, a team with a 2-1 record, rounds out the top five.
