CATHERINE CREEK STATE PARK, UNION – The 44th annual Catherine Creek Scamper proved to be a tad more wet than in previous years. The “mud hole” was present, but due to a storm, much of the course looked much like the dreaded hole.
The host Union boys’ cross-country team defended their home race, placing first with a score of 11 points, barely outdueling Enterprise’s 14 points. The Idaho team of Fruitland placed third.
Enterprise senior Zac Knapp posted his best time of the young season, taking first place in a time of 17 minutes, 22 seconds. Fellow senior Bayden Menton placed third with a time of 17:53.6.
Sandwiched between the two Outlaw runners was Union junior Taylor Fox. Fox crossed the line with a time of 17:45.9. He was joined in the top five by sophomore Eli Williams in fifth place with a time of 18:27.3. Pine Eagle senior Caleb Brown was fourth, coming in just over the 18-minute mark at 18:06.7.
Vale’s best finish came from Trevor Stewart in tenth (19:24.2). Baker junior Thaddeus Pepera (19:42.0), in 14th, was top for the Bulldogs. For Grant Union, junior Quinn Larson (20;34.2) was 20th. La Grande junior Caleb Murie (21:00.0) was tops for the Tigers in 24th and Nyssa senior Christian Mardock (21:20.4) placed 27th for the Bulldogs. One spot behind, Nixyaawii sophomore Baron Moses (21:45.8) had the top spot for the Golden Eagles. For the Riverside Pirates, junior William Harris (25:06.9) placed 40th.
The host Union girls came up one spot short of equaling the boys’ team, placing second behind Idaho’s Parma Panthers. Parma, 49 points, was two points better than Union’s 51 points. The Bulldogs of Baker finished third with a point total of 64.
La Grande sophomore Emily Tubbs ran away from the crowd, winning the race with a time of 21:50.4. Union senior Audrey Wells placed second with a time of 22:11.3 and an additional Tiger sophomore, Kiah Carlson was third.
Baker did crack the top five as senior Emma Baeth (22:56.7) placed fifth. For Enterprise, sophomore Iona McDaonald led the team with a time of 24:02.2 and a 14th place finish. Riverside saw freshman Caelyn Pullen place 34th and Nixyaawii junior Sophoe Bronson finished 54th. One spot behind Bronson was Vale’s best finish, sophomore Harley Belnap.
