STANFIELD – The race was all eastern Oregon as teams gathered on Friday, Sept. 23 for the Big Cat Classic in Stanfield.
Led by the top three finishers in the girls’ race, the La Grande Tigers picked up the team title, beating out second place Enterprise and third place Heppner.
Tiger junior Emily Tubbs continues to show up to races and win, taking first in a time of 20 minutes, 31.2 seconds. The Big Cat is her third consecutive individual win this season. Tubbs was followed by teammate Cecilia Villagomez and La Grande freshman Brooke Perry.
Enterprise freshman Owyhee Harguess and Heppner freshman Lily Nichols rounded out the top five.
The Enterprise boys ran away with the team title with 39 points, beating second place Stanfield/Echo and third place Heppner.
Running his best time this season, Heppner senior Trevor Nichols was the first runner to cross the line, clocking a time of 16:39.3. Weston-McEwen senior Alex McIntyre was second and Pine Eagle senior Cooper Gover placed third to make the finish an array of schools. Stanfield/Echo added Habtamu Hurty in fourth and Jagjot Singh in fifth.
Easternoregonsports.com is again standing out from other media sources by listing all the runners from eastern Oregon schools in the cross-country competitions. First or 41st, all these runners made it to the finish line. There is only a single runner with the best time, but there are many more stories worth mentioning afterwards.
