BEND – A defense that held North Valley to only 25 yards on the ground game pushed the Vale Vikings to a 20-3 semifinal victory over the North Valley Knights on Saturday, Nov. 23 in 3A semifinal action. The win propels the Vikings into the championship game against a well-known foe, the Burns Hilanders.
North Valley placed points on the board first, kicking a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter to jump out 3-0.
The Vikings waited until the second quarter to begin scoring as Kase Schaffeld scored the first of his two rushing scores on a 4-yard run to put the Vikings up 8-3 at the 6 minute, 24 second mark in the second quarter.
The Viking defense took over in the second half, holding the Knights to zero points and only 22 total yards for the half. For the game, the Knights were held to 120 total yards with only 21 rushes for 25 yards. Quarterback Roy McGregor was intercepted three times by the Vale secondary, completing nine passes for 95 yards on 26 attempts.
Schaffeld added a second score at the 4:38 mark in the third quarter and Vale added the third and final score on a quarterback run by Brooks Aldred to cap off the victory.
Schaffeld continued to be the work horse for Vale, carrying 31 times for 178 yards. The Vale offense finished the game just under the 300-yard mark with 299 total yards.
The loss for the Knights marked the team’s lowest point output of the season.
The Vikings now prepare for a rematch versus the 10-2 Burns Hilanders on Saturday, Nov. 30 with a return for both teams to Summit High School in Bend. Burns, the 11th seed in the bracket, continued to take down higher seeded teams with a win over second seed Banks, 22-15.
