State champions meet on basketball floor

ADRIAN – There are few basketball teams who know each other as well the Jordan Valley and Adrian boys’ basketball squads. Just a few short months ago, the two schools combined for a state football championship on the field in Hermiston. On Friday, January 31, the athletes formerly wearing the same uniform stood facing each other-Adrian in green and Jordan Valley in blue.

Coaches hugged members of both teams. Players joked with each other on the foul line. Slaps on the back were plenty. In the end, the Mustangs downed the Antelopes, 66-48.

The Mustangs drew first blood when Birch Eiguren grabbed an offensive rebound, putting the ball back up and in for the first points of the game. The Lopes tied up the score just 30 seconds later when Gavin Bayes found nothing but net on his first shot of the game.

As the first eight minutes came to an end, Adrian led 18-17 over their former teammates.

Jordan Valley came alive in the second quarter and led at the half, 30-25.

It was the second half that saw the Mustangs extend their lead and march towards the win. Jordan Valley outscored Adrian 18 to 12 in the third and led going into the final eight minutes, 48-37.

Hitting from the outside with Jace Grenke putting up five 3-pointers in the game, the Mustangs cruised to the win.

Grenke and Kort Skinner both ended the night with 18 points to lead Jordan Valley. Eiguren and Blaise Warn each added 11 points.

For Adrian, Conley Martin had 14 points, the lone Antelope in double figures. Bayes ended his night with seven points.
