BAKER – On Friday, May 13, eight teams will gather at Weston-McEwen High School promptly at 11 a.m. to decide the district championship for the 2A Special District 5. While the season provides a good indicator of what may occur, a false start, dropped baton, unknown injury or anything else could prove the following article absolutely worthless. That being said, here is our analysis of the upcoming meet.
Boys
100 meters: 1. Justin Hodge (Grant Union), 11.49. 2. Ransom Peters (Enterprise), 11.62. 3. Levi Ortswan (Enterprise), 11.66. 4. Luke Jackson (Grant Union), 11.75. 5. Cameron Reich (Weston-McEwen), 11.99.
The top five runners are all under 12 seconds with the top four running their personal best times this year. Just to make things interesting, number six is Heppner freshman Hayden McMahon, also coming in at 11.99 seconds.
200 meters: 1. Luke Jackson (Grant Union), 23.49. 2. Levi Ortswan (Enterprise), 23.85. 3. Ransom Peters (Enterprise), 24.07. 4. Theodore White (Weston-McEwen), 24.12. 5. Cashton Wheeler (Grant Union), 24.92.
Again, top five times are close and a bad step out of the blocks could be the difference in this race.
400 meters: 1. Levi Ortswan (Enterprise), 50.99. 2. Luke Jackson (Grant Union), 54.48. 3. Theodore White (Weston-McEwen), 54.82. 4. Cashton Wheeler (Grant Union), 55.17. 5. Alex McIntyre (Weston-McEwen), 55.42.
Enterprise’s Ortswan looks to be peaking at exactly the right time.
800 meters: 1. Trevor Nichols (Heppner), 2:00.65. 2. Zac Knapp (Enterprise), 2:01.13. 3. Alex McIntyre (Weston-McEwen), 2:01.61. 4. Joseph Sherman (Heppner), 2:09.64. 5. Hobbs Hurty (Stanfield/Echo), 2:10.72.
We again face the question of exactly what races will Enterprise’s Knapp run at districts? The top three times are all within one second of each other with Knapp winning the 800 on May 6 in Grant Union.
1500 meters: 1. Zac Knapp (Enterprise), 4:04.80. 2. Trevor Nichols (Heppner), 4:17.51. 3. Alex McIntyre (Weston-McEwen), 4:18.89. 4. Hobbs Hurty (Stanfield/Echo), 4:29.21. 5. Joseph Sherman (Heppner), 4:40.14.
This race is a little easier than the 800-Knapp runs away with this one.
3000 meters: 1. Zac Knapp (Enterprise), 8:37.37. 2. Trevor Nichols (Heppner), 9:20.19. 3. Alex McIntyre (Weston-McEwen), 9:20.75. 4. Jagjot Singh (Stanfield-Echo), 10:03.29. 5. Andrew Hurley (Enterprise), 10:14.61.
As the races become longer, Knapp becomes better.
110-meter hurdles: 1. Bo Ledbetter (Union), 16.63. 2. Ed Ellsworth (Heppner), 17.46. 3. Skylar Jeffers (Pilot Rock), 18.20. 4. Sebastian Roggiero (Weston-McEwen), 18.28. 5. Roan Flynn (Enterprise), 18.43.
Union’s Ledbetter ran 16.81 in Baker on May 6, still the lone runner under 17 seconds among the field. He has finished no less than third place for the season with those coming at large meets with large schools.
300-meter hurdles: 1. Bo Ledbetter (Union), 43.34. 2. Skylar Jeffers (Pilot Rock), 43.82. 3. Roan Flynn (Enterprise), 45.07. 4. Sebastian Roggiero (Weston-McEwen), 45.23. 5. Ed Ellsworth (Heppner), 45.25.
This one is not as easy to pick as Ledbetter and Pilot Rock’s Jeffers are one-half second apart. A lean at the tape could be the difference.
4X100 relay: 1. Grant Union, 44.93. 2. Enterprise, 46.79. 3. Weston-McEwen, 46.83. 4. Pilot Rock, 48.21. 5. Heppner, 48.74.
With a decent race, Grant Union wins, but the fight for second could be epic.
4X400 relay: 1. Enterprise, 3:37.14. 2. Heppner, 3:44.38. 3. Weston-McEwen, 3:45.46. 4. Union, 3:50.09. 5. Stanfield/Echo, 3:52.79.
Enterprise mid-distance runners are just too strong for the rest of the field.
Shot put: 1. Peter Miranda (Culver), 44’7. 2. Anthony Keeney (Stanfield/Echo), 43’10.5. 3. Conor Brosnan (Heppner), 42’9. 4. Justin Hodge (Grant Union), 41’1. 5. Tucker Carpenter (Grant Union), 40’11.75.
The level of competition has jumped this year dramatically in this event. Grant Union’s Hodge was third in the state meet last year with a throw of 41’3 and would only place fourth in districts with that same measurement. Culver’s Miranda is the lone athlete over 44 feet.
Discus: 1. Conor Brosnan (Heppner), 135’5. 2. Anthony Keeney (Stanfield/Echo), 129’6. 3. Brian Day (Weston-McEwen), 125’3. 4. Carter Burnette (Stanfield/Echo), 123’11.5. 5. Lucas Wolf (Grant Union), 120’4.
This event is heavy on experience with the top five including four seniors and one junior.
Javelin: 1. Caleb Sprenger (Weston-McEwen), 162’2.5. 2. Justin Hodge (Grant Union), 156’9.5. 3. Riddick Hutchison (Grant Union), 140’7. 4. Brian Day (Weston-McEwen), 133’9. 5. Evan Cloutier (Union), 133’0.
This is a two-way fight between Weston-McEwen’s Sprenger and Grant Union’s Hodge.
High jump: 1. Evan Cloutier (Union), 5’10. 2. Claeb Sprenger (Grant Union), 5’8. 2. Joseph Sherman (Heppner), 5’8. 4. Sebastian Roggiero (Weston-McEwen), 5’6. 4. Austin Ritter (Union), 5’6.
Most of the PRs in this event are over one month old. Someone needs to step up and set a mark.
Pole vault: 1. Bo Ledbetter (Union), 11’0. 2. Gator Goodrich (Stanfield/Echo), 10’6. 3. Sam Baxter (Union), 10’0. 4. Max Bailey (Grant Union), 9’6. 4. Quinn Larson (Grant Union), 9’6. 4. Mason Droke (Union), 9’6.
Look for the Badgers to pick up team points in this event.
Long jump: 1. Cameron Reich (Weston-McEwen), 19’11. 2. Mason Morris (Grant Union), 19’5. 3. Reece Ball (Weston-McEwen), 19’4.75. 4. Roan Flynn (Enterprise), 18’8. 5. Justin Hodge (Grant Union), 18’6.
It would sure be nice to see Weston-McEwen’s Reich use the district meet to hit that 20-feet mark. He scratched at the Baker meet on May 6.
Triple jump: 1. Mason Morris (Grant Union), 43’11. 2. Mason Droke (Union), 37’8. 3. Bo Ledbetter (Union), 37’7. 4. Anthony Nix (Weston-McEwen), 37’5. 5. Weston Wolfe (Enterprise), 37’1.5.
The fight here will be for second place. Three inches separate three athletes.
PREDICTION: Give the slight advantage here to Grant Union as district champions. Enterprise and the host TigerScots close on the heels of the Prospectors.
