Powder Valley’s Lind Becomes A Badger/Mustang (Badstang?) For A Day (Full 1A girls results)

John L. Braese

WINSTON – Powder Valley wrestler Marli Lind has two state 1A championships to her name. Even with the experience on the mat, Lind found herself as the lone female Badger at the recent 1A Statewide Girls Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25. In some tournaments, this situation would transfer to no teammates to warm up with, no cheering squad on the side of the mat, no coach yelling from the chair.

Enter the Crane Mustangs and Coach Dave Doman.

Lind was “adopted” for the tournament by Doman and the Crane squad. She warmed up with the Mustangs, had Mustangs cheering for her as she took the mat and heard Doman yelling at her, “shoot, take your shot”.

All this from two teams 213 miles apart from each other’s doors.

Lind typically finds support from her Bulldog teammates and coaches as Powder Valley joins with 4A Baker for girls wrestling. However, for this 1A meeting of teams, Lind found Crane as her support. This was not a new occurrence as Lind was supported last season by the Mustangs and Doman at the 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament where Lind picked up her state title.

As the official OSAA state tournament combines 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A teams, the coaches of the 1A squads hold an “unofficial” tournament annually, combining just the small school teams.

In addition to Lind taking the title at 155 pounds, current Four Rivers and Treasure Valley Community College commit Lacatia Mason grabbed first place at 110 pounds. At 125 pounds, Echo’s Avery Fisher took a technical fall victory over Elgin’s Amber George for the title.

The Huskies of Elgin, the team champions for the day, saw Jacie Lathrop pin Joseph’s Gwen Bostedt for the title at 135 pounds. Adding to the Elgin point total, Bailey Hasbell won the 145-pound division after a pin over Crane’s April Lopez. In addition to their adopted Lind, Crane also saw Gracie Baker win it all at 190 pounds.
