SWEET HOME – The season was short and the tournament was organized by coaches and athletic directors from throughout the state. But, on Friday, June 25 and Saturday, June 26, it all came together for the 2A/1A wrestlers from around the state. Meeting in Sweet Home, the culminating tournament took place.
In the team results, Culver ran away with the title, scoring 231.5 points. Pine Eagle was second with 94.5 points and third place went to Central Linn and the team’s 89 points.
Individually, eastern Oregon made the mark in multiple weight classes.
At 120 pounds, Imbler junior Garrett Burns grabbed the championship medal with a 6-2 decision over Central Linn’s Blake Owens.
Pine Eagle junior Chase Butner also found himself atop the standings with a 7-4 decision over Culver’s Brody Piercy at 126 pounds. Teammate Coy Butner received third place in the 132-pound class. Staying with Pine Eagle, senior Cutter Tanaka finished his high school career on the mats with a second place showing at 138 pounds. At 195 pounds, Pine Eagle senior finished his final time on the mat with a championship after pinning Colton’s Nolan Earls at the 3 minute, 10 second mark.
Union senior Carter Blackburn, wrestling at 145 pounds, placed third after pinning Lakeview’s Brayson Granger.
Enterprise senior Trace Evans also placed second after falling to Culver’s Anthony Hood by a 10-4 decision in the 152-pound division.
At 160 pounds, Elgin sophomore placed second and Grant Union junior placed third.
Heppner junior Jace Coe fell in the title match to Lakeview’s Morgan Ludwig by a score of 5-3, placing second at 182 pounds.
Crane senior Jerett Doman made history for the Mustangs, claiming the first individual title ever for Crane. Doman downed Culver’s Eduardo Penaloza by major decision, 12-3.
Grant Union sophomore Rylan Cox placed fourth in the 285-pound division, falling to Coquille’s Tommy Vigue.
