WALLOWA – Running on arguably the most scenic cross country course this season, the combined girls’ team of Enterprise/Wallowa/Joseph claimed the team title on their home course at the Wallowa County Invitation on Friday, Sept. 20 at Wallowa State Park.
The Outlaw girls ended the race with 55 points while second place Imbler scored 63 points. The combined team of Union/Cove finished third, five points better than fourth place La Grande. Heppner, Umatilla and Elgin rounded out the team scores.
In the battle of “current versus future”, experience won out in the individual standings as La Grande junior Brooke Perry crossed the line ahead of Pine Eagle freshman Lindsey Brown. Imbler senior Paiten Braseth finished eight seconds behind Brown in third and Enterprise freshman Lilly Weer was just over one-half second behind in fourth. La Grande senior Cecilia Villagomez-Edvalson rounded out the top five runners.
The Wallowa win is only the second race of the season for Perry with a first place showing in both. Her time of 19 minutes, 18.1 seconds is a course best for Perry for the Wallowa run. Brown took the Wallowa race to post her best time of the season at 20:06.9, knocking 15 seconds off her previous top time.
With four runners in the top ten, the Union/Cove boys outpointed host Enterprise in the team scoring, 37 to 48. La Grande grabbed third followed by Umatilla, Imbler and Nixyaawii.
Outlaw senior Jett Leavitt ran away from the field, finishing as the lone runner under 17 minutes with a time of 16:23.0. La Grande junior Josef Simonis and Bobcat sophomore battled for second with Simonis taking the spot by less than one second.
Like La Grande’s Perry, Leavitt has taken the course in only two races this year, winning both and posting times under 17 minutes in both.
