ONTARIO – In high school sports, acting on your advantage could be the difference between a win or a loss. Soccer teams count on that one goalie who won’t let anything get by or volleyball teams substitute that one player with a kill shot that is a sure winner. Football offenses continue to pound the ball towards the left side when the advantage is found.
The Ontario football and volleyball teams took advantage of the issue of differing time zones to become the first teams in the state to officially begin practices. Hitting the court and field at 12:01 a.m. on August 15, the Tigers can claim the title of first team for the 2022-23 season.
“The lights were on at Tiger Stadium and loud cheers echoed through the hallways as eager athletes threw the first pass and hit the first serve to start the season,” said Ontario Athletic Director Josh Mink.
While being first in the state to practice, Football Head Coach Greg Simmons and Volleyball Head Coach Emelia Padilla have a secondary goal.
“Our goal is to not only be the first team to practice, but also the last team practicing in the state”, the two said jointly.
Bypassing sleep or a late-night snack, approximately 45 football players and 25 volleyball players were in attendance to kick off the fall season of sports, the first student athletes to do so in the state.
Mink said the Tigers will continue to be the first team in the state to start the season, promising a larger celebration of the achievement next year.
