VALE – As the Vale and Ontario tennis teams took to the courts on Tuesday, April 12, the temperature stood at a sweltering 43 degrees. Tennis shorts and t-shirts were replaced by sweatpants and, on some players, winter coats. As the wind picked up in speed and the temperature dropped, only a single player, Vale’s Ali Aldred showed true eastern Oregon bravery by attempting to play clad only in shorts and a sleeveless shirt. That attire lasted three sets before the sweatshirt went back on to finish out the match.

Cold aside, two teams played to a final 5-5 tie. Ontario dominated the boys’ singles competition, winning all three matches. The girls’ singles saw matches go 2-1 for the Tigers, but the Vikings dominated the girls’ doubles action, 3-0.

The match of the day came in the boys’ doubles. Vale’s Luke McGourty and John Wolfe downed the Tigers’ Eduardo Navarro-Ramirez and Jared Halley in the first set, 6-4 and looked to be cruising in the second set, taking a 4-0 lead. The Ontario duo fought back and at 6-6, the match was forced into a tie breaker. With Ontario teammates lining the side of the court pulling for the Tigers and Vale parents cheering for the Vale duo, McGourty and Wolfe were able to finally pull out the victory after a number of extended points.
