RENO – The contingent of female wrestlers representing eastern Oregon made the most of a regional showing, placing first, second and third while competing at the Sierra Classic in Reno.

Leading the charge was Nyssa’s Noelle Acosta, the champion in the 150-pound division. Acosta started the championship round on Saturday, December 28 with a bye before pinning her opponent in the quarterfinal match. A win by decision in the semifinal propelled Acosta to the first place match against Casa Roble’s Jordan Gumpfer. Acosta made quick work of Gumpfer, taking the pin at the 3 minute, 42 second mark for the title.
The Nyssa team finished seventh in the team standings. In addition to Acosta’s championship, the Bulldogs picked up points with Vanessa Ruiz placing third, Anayelo Celedonio placing fourth, Sarahy Guerrero placing sixth and Junnie Morales placing sixth in their respective weight classes.
The La Grande girls placed 15th in the team standings based on the efforts of the Gulzow family. Wrestling at 101 pounds, Delia Gulzow picked up second place after falling in the championship match to Wooster’s Isabelle Silva by pin. In the 111-pound class, Bella Gulzow was third, winning three of five matches on the final day of action.
