NYSSA – As the Nyssa Bulldogs and Irrigon Knights volleyball teams warmed up in the Nyssa gym, both teams realized one thing-the winner would go on to play Vale in the district tournament while the losing squad would see the season come to an end.
It will be Nyssa on the road to Burns on Saturday to meet up with the Vale Vikings as the Bulldogs downed the Knights, 3-0 in the first round of the Eastern Oregon League tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 20 in Nyssa.
The Dawgs dominated the first set, putting up the first 14 points behind the serving of Brooklyn Johns. Behind early, Irrigon was unable to play catch up and Nyssa grabbed set one, 25-7.
The second set proved closer, much closer. The Knights led early in the second set before the Bulldogs rebounded and went up 16-8. Irrigon’s Esmerelda DeLoera took to the service line and pulled the Knights to within two points at 16-14. The Knights stayed close throughout the end of the second set, but Nyssa ultimately was able to grab a 25-23 second set victory.
Irrigon again started the third set strong, leading early. The Bulldogs took the lead at the 8-7 mark and never looked back. A tap over the net by Johns provided Nyssa a 25-20 third set win and the match.
Nyssa now travels to Burns on Saturday, Oct. 23 to take on the second seed Vale Vikings at 11am mountain time. The winner of that match will take on the league leading Hilanders.
