EUGENE – The Nyssa Bulldog girls’ track and field team returned from Eugene as the state champions. For the Dawgs, compiling 71.5 points to take the title was a truly team effort as no Nyssa athlete claimed an individual state title. Using a large array of second and third place showings, Nyssa outdid St. Mary’s-Medford and the Crusaders’ 70 points.
Nyssa senior Marly Ausman capped off her high school career with a second place showing in the discus, ending with a distance of 115 feet, 5 inches. Adding to the point total was sophomore Ambrie Draper’s second-place finish coming in the pole vault after clearing 10 feet. Junior Asbel Tellez-Jaquez picked up third place in the 100-meters with a time of 13.24 seconds and freshman Julianna Bowns showed the future is bright for Nyssa with a second place in the triple jump after making a mark of 34 feet, 3 inches.

A fitting ending to the competition, the final race decided Nyssa’s fate. The Bulldog 4-by-400 relay team of Ella Draper, Jaquez, Kate Vineyard and Gracie Johnson took the track trailing St. Mary’s Medford. Needing a first or second place ending to the race, the Bulldogs were able to outduel Westside Christian for the second-place points and a state team title.
Across the board, girls from the 3A eastern Oregon were shut out of individual state titles. However, Umatilla senior Taylor Durfey leaves high school with a second place finish the shot put and a third-place showing in the javelin.
Youth again showed through for eastern Oregon as Burns sophomore Aliyah Adams, with a time of 27.33 seconds, finished second in the 200-meters. Hilanders senior Riley Morris scored second in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:00.17.
