Easternoregonsports.com has picked up so many new followers since last track season we need to explain a few things. Unlike other media outlets, we provide more than the top three or five finishes for events. We believe every student athlete putting the effort forth deserves recognition. The runner finishing 28th did not work less than the runner crossing the tape in first. You will find every finisher in this article representing eastern Oregon schools. Yes, it is more work and yes, the article is long. But easternoregonsports is pleased you will find your favorite athlete no matter their finish.
NEW PLYMOUTH, ID – A number of Idaho schools may think twice before inviting the Nyssa track and field team to a meet after the Bulldogs grabbed both the boys and girls team title at the New Plymouth Meet on Thursday, April 7.
The Bulldog boys put up 113 points to take the title with Adrian, scoring 77 points, ended the day in third place. Our third Oregon team, Harper, placed 15th.
Junior speedster Orin Stipe led the Nyssa charge, placing first in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Stipe added to his day with a second-place finish in the pole vault followed by a fourth-place finish in the long jump event.
Nyssa freshman Skyler Cade made a name for himself, placing second in the 400-meter race and junior Martin Mendez also had a runner-up finish, his coming in the 800 meters.
Future Adrian track athletes have a new record to shoot for as Antelope junior Jace Martin set a new school record of 11.22 seconds in the 100 meters, a time good enough for first place. Martin joined with brother Conley, Riley Griffin and Gavin Bayes for wins in both the 4-by-100 relay and the 4-by-200 relay races (this meet was in Idaho and running Idaho events).
The Harper boys saw their best finish in the discus event as junior Ryker Thomson placed sixth.
The Nyssa girls also grabbed the team title, amassing 148 points. The Lope girls placed fourth in the team point total.
Bulldog junior Gracie Johnson added to the Nyssa total with wins in the 200-meter race and high jump. The 400-meter race was led by Nyssa junior Asbel Tellez Jaquez and senior Marly Ausmen won the discus after a second place showing in the shot put.
Adrian is showing strength in the distance events as sophomore Pressley Speelmon was tops in the 1600 meters and sophomore Evalyn Nunez was the top runner in the 3200 meters.
The speed in relays also came through as senior Riley Lucas, senior Lizzy Nielson, Speelmon and freshman Addy Martin had the top times in both the 4-by-100 relay and the 4-by-200 relay.
