NYSSA – Throw away league standings, state rankings and past performances. The Vale girls were in the Nyssa gym for an EOL game on Saturday, Jan. 13.
Tied at 48 at the end of regulation, the Lady Vikings hit the long range shots in overtime and took a 64-53 Eastern Oregon League win.
After an initial basket by Vale senior Halle Peterson to start the scoring, the first quarter belong to the Lady Bulldogs as Nyssa took the lead at the 6 minute, 28 second mark, going on to lead 17-12 after the first eight minutes were off the clock.
Nyssa maintained the lead at halftime, going into the locker room with a 29-23 margin. Vale closed the margin to a single point with the Bulldogs holding down a 39-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
For the first time since early in the first quarter, the Vikings led at the 6:17 mark in the fourth quarter, 42-41. The two teams stood tied at 44 points and again at 46 points. Hailey Cleaver gave Vale a 48-46 lead with 50 seconds left in the game. However, with 35 second left, Brynlee Hartley sank two free throws to again see identical points on the scoreboard and force the game into overtime.
Vale started the overtime period with eight points in the first minute, including two three-pointers. Nyssa, playing from behind and struggling from the free throw line, took the loss.
