La Grande’s Tubbs Is State Champ

LANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, EUGENE – La Grande sophomore Emily Tubbs returned home from the state cross country meet a champion.

After attending the event last year as a freshman and placing ninth, Tubbs dominated the 4A field on Saturday, Nov. 5, winning by just under 15 seconds. Tubbs finished the 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 4.60 seconds. She bested her time of last year by over 45 seconds.

Tubbs helped the Tigers to a fourth-place team finish behind champion Siuslaw. Philomath placed second and Marist took the third spot. The Baker Bulldogs placed ninth in the team scores.

Tubbs leads a team of young runners for the Tigers, a positive for La Grande running. Freshman Cecilia Villagomez placed in the top ten, placing ninth with a time of 20:25.30. Sophomore Kiah Carlson finished in 14th and fellow sophomore Faith Calhoun placed 22nd. Junior Anne Sweet was 77th.

The Baker team was led by senior Emma Baeth and her time of 21:31.80, a 36th-place finish. Right behind Baeth was freshman Sofia Kaaen in 37th. Carroll College bound Sydney Lamb finished 40th and sophomore Katie Spaugh was 56th. Sophomore Emma Timm placed 60th and in her first state meet, freshman Annastasia Johnson was 62nd.
