The Vikings and Tigers battled in game one, forcing the set into extra points before La Grande took a 26-24 win. The momentum carried over into the second set as the Tigers scored the first none points. La Grande went on to a 25-18 victory. In the third and final set, La Grande was able to come away with a 25-22 score and the match victory.
“It was a great match for us, a true team effort,” said La Grande coach Melinda Becker-Bisenius. “The girls were working hard and the teamwork was outstanding.”
Offensively, the Tigers were led by senior Anna Green and junior Grace Neer, both putting up five kills. Senior Hayden Robinson collected four kills. Green also was credited with 19 digs while Neer served perfect for he night.
Senior Presley Justice also posted a perfect night from the service line while adding nine assists. Junior Izzy Kump also finished the night with nine digs.
“I really liked our defense tonight and we had some great rallies,” said Vale head coach Shannon Steele. “Considering we had four practices before tonight, we looked good. At times, we lost our focus and quit talking, but La Grande is a scrappy team and Melinda is an outstanding coach.”
From the service line, the Viks were led by junior Taleah Zueger and sophomore Ali Aldred, both serving 12-for-12. Junior Jaymo Jensen was 14-for-15 with two aces.
Zueger also picked up 25 digs with senior Tyanna Norton recording 15 digs. Aldred had 22 assists for the night.
La Grande (1-0) will again make the trip to Malheur County on Friday to take on the Nyssa Bulldogs. The Vikings (0-1) look to pick up win number one with a trip to meet the Hilanders (1-0) in Burns, also on Friday.
