WALLOWA – Typically, the Wallowa County Invitational provides a good idea of what to watch in the end of the season’s district cross country meets. This year proved to be no different.
The La Grande girls claimed the team title over a host of 2A and a 4A opponent led by one more race win by Tiger’s Emily Tubbs. The La Grande junior crossed the line in 20 minutes, 18.6 seconds for the individual title. Tubbs was followed closely by teammate Cecilia Villagomez in second and in third, Heppner’s Lily Nichols.
The Enterprise girls placed second in the team scoring led by a fifth-place finish by Mary Hellinger. The Union cross country team, with two runners in the top ten, placed third in the team standings.
Continuing their team dominance this year, the Union boys outdid the rest of the field in the team scores, placing first with 33 points. 4A Baker was second and 2A Heppner finished third.
Union senior Taylor Fox and Heppner senior Trevor Nichols continued their running battle with Fox coming out on top in Wallowa. Fellow Bobcat Eli Williams placed third.
Easternoregonsports.com is again standing out from other media sources by listing all the runners from eastern Oregon schools in the cross-country competitions. First or 41st, all these runners made it to the finish line. There is only a single runner with the best time, but there are many more stories worth mentioning afterwards.
