LA GRANDE – A strong second day showing pushed the La Grande girls wrestling team to a repeat of a 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 3 championship, wrapping up action on Saturday, Feb. 15 on the Tigers’ home mats.
La Grande finished with 273.5 points, just under 50 points better than second place Crook County. Third place went to the combined team of Baker/Powder Valley with Nyssa picking up fourth place, 19 points better than fifth place Vale.
The bus leaving La Grande heading to the state wrestling meet will be crowded as 11 Tigers qualified for the chance for a state medal.
A few surprises did arise from the district meet. At 115 pounds, Burns freshman Hadley Gunderson will make her first trip to the state championship after grabbing a district title and finishing the season with a 39-5 record. In the final match, Gunderson met another freshman, Nyssa’s Macy Dunn with Gunderson winning by pin.
The closest match of the day came at 130 pounds as Crook County sophomore Talor Echeverria grabbed the win by the slimmest of margins, a 2-1 decision over Vale senior Payton Perry. In an additional nail biter, La Grande senior Paige Allen fought to a 3-2 victory over Elgin freshman Bailey Hasbell in the 145 pound class.
The Hilander bus heading to state will be young as Burns freshman Megan Weil pinned La Grande junior Maddie Armstrong for a first place showing at 190 pounds.
On the other side of the coin, Grant Union senior Mallory Lusco wrapped up an outstanding 29-1 season, placing first at 235 pounds and again qualifying for a run at a state title.
