HILLSBORO – The La Grande offense, typically hot and finding goals easily, proved to be as cold as the evening was in Hillsboro as Marist Catholic claimed a 4A state soccer championship with a 5-0 win over the Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.

The top seeded Marist Catholic squad scored three goals in the first half followed by two goals in the second for the victory.

Playing in cold, rainy and miserable conditions, La Grande was credited to no shots on goal, translating to a boring night for Marist Catholic keeper Emily Meigs.

La Grande goalie Lyndie Isaacson allowed five goals but also had nine saves in the slick, wet conditions. The La Grande defense saw Marist Catholic’s Libby McLoughlin put in three goals for the match with Ella Shepard and Ella Braunger each adding one goal each. For her efforts in the box, Isaacson was named the Player of the Game for La Grande.

“In the second half, if the girls moved away from the heater on the sideline, the wind and rain blew out the flame,” said La Grande coach Chris Gianandrea. “It rained so hard the turf could not get rid of the water and started to pool up in spots.”

The Tigers end the season with a 14-2-1 overall record. Five seniors will depart due to graduation including Isaacson, Nora Gisi, Sarah Garwood, Natasha Lane and Paige Allen. The Tigers will return nine to-be seniors as the fall season opens next season.

“This has been a fantastic season,” said Gianandrea. “I cannot express enough the support and love the community showed this team. Marist is a good team but the girls played until the final whistle and never held their head down.”
