NYSSA – Basketball fans of low scoring, high rebounding games would enjoy the first half of the matchup between La Grande and Nyssa that occurred Thursday, June 3 in Nyssa.
Fans needed to wait until almost two minutes of the game had ticked off before the first points went on the board on a basket by La Grande junior Brady Hutchins. Hutchins added a long three-point basket to put the Tigers up 5-0.
At the two minute, 27 second mark, Nyssa finally placed points on the board as senior Nico Gomeza hit a basket.
At the end of the first eight minutes of play, La Grande led 10-6. The low scoring continued in the second quarter and as the half ended, Tigers led the Bulldogs 17-12.
La Grande led 31-22 at the conclusion of the third quarter and took the 45-33 victory in a game marked by a fast pace and multiple missed shots on the part of both teams.
Hutchins ended with 17 points to lead the Tigers. Sam Tsiatsos scored eight points in the La Grande win.
Gomeza led all scorers in the game with 18 points for Nyssa and was only one of four Bulldog players to score.
