NYSSA – The Union girls basketball team is currently sitting at the top of the 1A state rankings and on Saturday, Dec. 28, 3A Nyssa discovered why. After a relatively quiet first half, Union senior Kaelyn Shoemaker scored 15 of her game high 21 points to push the Bobcats over the Bulldogs, 57-44 in nonleague play.

Nyssa, already lacking size in the paint due to a season-ending injury and on Saturday, a player out of town, saw the Bobcats use their size inside to take the victory.

The two teams played to a 24-24 tie at halftime. The third quarter saw the Bulldogs scoring all 12 points from the perimeter with four threes while Union started to push the ball inside with a 14-point quarter. The final eight minutes belonged to the Bobcats with 19 points being placed on the board.

Kaelyn Shoemaker led all scorers while sister Sawyer added 14 points. Millie Miller saw a 10-point game.

Nyssa split the scoring as both Chloe Johns and Paisley Johnson ended with 12 points each. Seven Bulldogs added to the Nyssa total. The Dawgs did not help their cause from the free throw line, ending the game 3-for-14.
