Hornets Will Take The Floor Next Season In New Gym

Jamieson Produce is an onion packing shed located in Vale, Oregon that packs and ships onions across the United States 12 months of the year. It has been in operation for nearly 40 years and currently employees about 50 people. Over the years our business has grown and to date we pack and ship over 100 million pounds of onions each year. We appreciate the quality onions our growers provide and the hard work our employees do every day. Jamieson Produce is owned by Doug and Terrie Maag and managed by Jeff Stubbs.

Y-1 Farms is located in Jamieson, Oregon and is owned by Doug and Terrie Maag and Corey and Mandi Maag. Various row crops such as onions, sugar beets, silage corn, alfalfa, and wheat are grown on nearly 2000 acres. The feed crops are used to provide feed for the feedlot they operate. Up to 12,000 head of cattle can be fed at Y-1 Farms. Y-1 Farms was established in 1985 but the Maag Family was farming before that. Doug farmed with his father, Warner Maag, for several years prior before purcasing his own farm. Y-1 Farms employs about 20 full-time employees to assist in operating the farm. We are extremely grateful for our employees and the hard work they provide.

HARPER – The dirt is already being moved and contractors are busy on site. After 100 years, it is time for Harper to build a new gym.

EOS had a nice chat with Harper Superintendent Ron Talbot on plans for the new building after sitting crammed in with Prairie City/Burnt River fans in a Panthers versus Hornets game. Many fans of both teams stood in the doorway or snuck a peak at the game in from the hallway.

Covering roughly 26,000 feet, the new construction will also house a kitchen, cafeteria, restrooms, office, teachers’ lounge and six 800-square-foot classrooms. This space will serve primarily 7-12 grade students.

The new gym will feature two full cross courts and six total baskets for practice. The baselines will be seven feet with five feet sidelines on the main court.

Bleachers will run the length of one side with varsity locker rooms on each end. An additional mezzanine will stretch the entire length of the court for additional seating along with providing an area for physical education. The players side of the gym will feature three rows of bleachers with a center three row section for game clock personnel and player check in area.

The physical location of the new facility will also help with the fall and spring season sports. Sitting directly on the 50-yard line, the new construction will feature a fully integrated press box and balcony allowing for filming and announcing  of track, football and other outdoor activities.

A full concession area will also be available with both inside and outside service windows.

The completion date is currently set for Dec. 15, 2025.

Throughout the next 10 or so months, EOS will be providing updates on the construction. Currently, a pile of dirt is not a great picture. On a personal note, congratulations go out to the Harper community, school board and all future Harper student athletes. After covering the Hornets for over 20 years, I will miss the memories of the ancient playground equipment where I could leave my son to play while I covered games (he is now a junior in high school). He made many a friends around that old jungle gym.
