NYSSA – Attending cross country meets around eastern Oregon, mostly the small school buses bring teams. A few of the large school buses were present at the Nyssa Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Joining a number of eastern Oregon teams were Idaho schools Borah (student population 1,417) and Middleton (student population 1,595).
Even facing larger numbers, Burns senior Masson Shaw placed second, helping the Hilanders to a third place team finish behind Middleton and Borah.
Shaw hit the finish line in a time of 17 minutes, 33.50 seconds, behind only Middleton’s Brody Kemble and a time of 16:50.97. Running in the heat of Nyssa, Shaw’s time was just under a minute slower than his season best of 16:36.3.
Helping out the Burns team score was also junior Carter Lardy finishing in the eighth slot with a time of 19:21.02.
The remaining top ten finish went to Vale sophomore Trevor Stewart in the sixth place. Stewart posted a finish of 18:37.21.
For the Ontario Tigers, junior Michael Gomez placed 17th and the host Nyssa Bulldogs saw the Bulldogs sneak into the top 20 with sophomore Spencer Romans grabbing 20th. Adrian’s lone participant, senior Chase Johnston placed 25th and leading the charge for Four Rivers was junior Aiden Herrera in 39th.
The Hilanders girls also picked up a third-place team standing behind first-place Middleton and second-place Borah. Idaho teams filled the top 15 individual placements with eastern Oregon finally breaking in at 16 with Burns junior Mattie Woodbury with a time of 25:22.01.

Adrian sophomore Evalyn Nunez was the only other eastern Oregon runner in the top 20, placing 18th.
For Vale, sophomore Ava Collins crossed the line 22nd and the Ontario Tigers saw senior Trinity Farr in 25th. Immediately following Farr was freshman Lacatia Mason in 26th, the top runner for Four Rivers. Playing host, Nyssa freshman Megan Ward placed 39th.
