VALE – The Burns volleyball team is in sole possession of first place in the 3A Eastern Oregon League after a 3-0 victory over the Vale Vikings on Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Vale. The Hilanders are the lone EOL team ranked in the top 20 statewide, currently sitting in eighth.
Set one was all Burns from the start as the Hilanders scored the initial three points of the set. The Viks were able to tie up the score early in the set before the Hilanders took over the match at the 6-5 mark. Burns scored the final 11 points of the set, cruising to a 25-9 victory.
It appeared the tables had turned in the second set as it was Vale jumping out early and leading 10-5 at one point. Burns knotted up the score at 15-all and outscored the Vikings 10 to 5 to take the second set, 25-20.
It was again Vale early in the third set, leading up until the score stood at 11-11. At this point, the Hilander offense again caught fire, dominating the set and winning the match 25-18.
“Vale had great play tonight from Brogan Payne and Kesley Stepleton,” said Vale coach Shannon Steele.
In the loss, the Vikings were led by JoJo Cleaver’s six kills while Payne and Stepleton added three kills each. Halle Peterson added five block as did Payne.
Elise Seals ended her night with 15 digs with Cleaver adding 10 digs and McKenna Justus ending with four digs,
