Hilanders dominate Tour De Willowcreek

John L. Braese

VALE – Those runners attending the inaugural Tour De Willowcreek will most certainly remember a few things about the race. The wind was howling and the day was chilly. On a course where runners traversed through farm fields and country roads, a rancher hauling home his new squeeze chute on a flatbed forced many to the side of the road. This was truly a country race.

The wind, the county road and the flatbed trailer did little to deter the Burns Hilanders from capturing both the boys and girls team titles.

On the girls’ side, Burns was the lone team with runners to put up a team score. In a sign of the future of cross country for the region, three of the top six finishers for the race were freshman including the champion Emily Tubbs of La Grande. The Tiger freshman finished the course in 20 minutes, 38 seconds. Teammate and fellow freshman Kiah Carlson was third with a time of 21:03.00. In sixth place, Adrian freshman Evalyn Nunez crossed the line in 22:39.10.

The Hilanders boys finished the day with 31 points, 10 points better than second place La Grande’s 41- point total. The Four Rivers Falcons were third with 67 points while Ontario picked up fourth place with 84 points.

The top three individual finishers represented three schools. La Grande senior Cristian Mendoza was crowned champion with a time of 16:20.40. He was followed by Burns runner Masson Shaw, a junior with a time of 16:46.10. The Ontario Tigers saw senior Lance Trees pick up third with a finish of 17:25.00.
