BURNS – Hosting a small contingent of teams on Friday, Sept. 20, the Burns cross country team grabbed both the boys and girls team titles for the running of the Burns Invite.
The Hilander boys, led by senior Tanner Joyce’s first place run, downed both Grant Union and Vale in the team scoring. Running on his home course, Joyce took the finish in a time of 18 minutes, 28 seconds. Vale sophomore Duncan Fritts was six seconds behind in second with Hilander senior Talon Morris in third. Grant Union’s top finish came at sixth place with sophomore Landon James.
Ony Burns placed the minimum number of runners on the course to qualify for a team score in the girls’ race.
Hilander freshman Hadley Gunderson can now claim her first championship at the high school level after finishing as the lone runner under 24 minutes, posting a time of 23:56.
The top five spots for the day were claimed by runners from the Burns team with Vale junior Greta Chamberlain finally breaking up the group after finishing sixth. Grant Union’s lone runner, freshman Adie Judd, placed seventh.
