Hilanders dominate Gold Rush

GRANT UNION – In the final meet of the season before this week’s district meets, the Burns Hilanders took both the boys and girls titles competing at the Grant Union Gold Rush on Thursday, October 24.

For the girls, Burns had to hold off Heppner, 25-38. The Vikings of Vale were third with host Grant Union, fourth. Ontario finished out the top five in team scoring.

The Hilanders picked up points by taking six of the top ten spots in the individual results. Sophomore Riley Morris led the charge, finishing third with a time of 20 minutes, 9.73 seconds. In fourth, freshman Brooke Smith came in at 20:32.15 and sophomore Oliva Winn picked up fifth by one-hundredth of a second at 20:32.15.

Heppner sophomore Hailey Heideman was the first runner at the line, outdueling her teammate, junior Madelyn Nichols. Heideman finished in 20:01.99 while Nichols crossed in 20:05.34.

The top finisher for Vale was junior Mattson Siddoway and for the host Grant Union team, senior Erika Dickens placed 12th. Ontario’ s top place went to sophomore Trinity Farr in 21st.

The Hilander boys dominated the rest of the field, scoring 15 points. Ontario, a distant second, finished with 62 points while Heppner placed third. Baker was fourth while Grant Union settled for fifth. Vale finished in the sixth spot.

Hilanders runners dominated the top five spots in the race led by senior JP Friedrichsen and his time of 16:50.58. Burns senior Calvin Bates was second followed by freshman Carter Lardy, sophomore Masson Shaw and senior Ryan Robles in fifth.

Heppner’s top finish went to freshman Trevor Nichols in sixth while Ontario senior Jacob Moore picked up eighth for the Tiger’s best finish. For the host Grant Union team, freshman Brady Dole crossed the line in 14th and Vale junior Caysen Young was 15th.
