BURNS – Looking at diminishing numbers out for football and a number of younger players, Burns High School has canceled the upcoming varsity football season. For this shortened season, the Hilanders will play a junior varsity season only.
“We just did not have enough players this year to play a varsity schedule,” said Erin Toelle, athletic director of the Hilanders. “We hardly had any seniors or juniors, so we decided to give the younger players some experience by playing a JV schedule.”

The announcement comes from a team typically in the running for a league title every year. Last season, the Hilanders finished 11-1, including a perfect record in the 3A Special District 3. The lone loss for Burns came in the semi-finals of the state tournament to Santiam Christian.
Toelle said a number of items came into play this year to reach this unprecedented decision.
“It has been a weird year,” she said. “We gave seniors the option of graduating early and some of them took advantage to work and prepare for college. We do have students opting for the online schooling also.”
Toelle said the Hilanders are fully expecting to return to a varsity schedule in the fall.
