Hilanders break tie of 4-5 teams

VALE – Sitting behind league leading Nyssa and second place Umatilla, a host of teams sat with 4-5 Eastern Oregon League records. On Saturday, February 15, two of those teams, Burns and Vale, met to determine the third place seeding heading into the district tournament. The Hilanders, after downing the Vikings 59-51 now have sole possession of third as seedings are worked out for the upcoming for the upcoming 3A-6 Eastern Oregon League tournament.

Burns jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after JP Friedrichsen’s initial basket at the 7 minute, 26 second mark. Vale waited until the 4:10 mark when Colton Kesey sank two free throws for the Vikings first points of the game. Burns led 16-7 after the first quarter.

Vale, putting up 16 points in the second quarter, headed to the locker room at the half with a slim 23-22 margin.

The third quarter found the two teams going back and forth on scoring with four lead changes and two ties in the eight minutes.

With three Vale starters fouling out in the final quarter, Burns took full advantage and extended their lead to 12 points at the 6:59 mark. The Vikings were never able to cut the lead down below the eight point final score.

For the Hilanders, Truston Snapp had a huge night, scoring 22 points including two from beyond the three-point arc. Dakota Ceja contributed 19 points and DJ Hoke put in 11 points.

In the loss, Vale was led by Brayden Gregory’s 17 points. John Wolfe finished with 10 points.

Burns finishes the regular season with a .500 record (12-12 overall, 5-5 league). Vale drops to 4-6 league record and a 10-13 overall record.

Both teams now await the seedings, place and time for the district tournament.
