Hilander freshman leads Burns to district title

PENDLETONBurns freshman Brooke Smith is making the most of her first year of high school cross country. In addition to leading the Hilanders to a 1A/2A/3A District 3 team title, Smith also took home the individual honor after placing first in the district meet on Friday in Pendleton.

Burns and Union will be representing the district at the upcoming state meet with the Hilanders taking the crown with 26 points. Union finished second with a point total of 76 while Enterprise barely misses out on the state trip in third place with 80 points.

The mix at the state cross country meet will also include Enterprise senior Ellyse Tingelstad and Heppner junior Madelyn Nichols after both finished in the top five individually. Tingelstad finished second in a time of 19 minutes, 13.1 seconds, seven seconds behind Smith’s 19:05.4. Nichols will be attending the state meet after a fifth-place finish at 19:41.6.

Burns dominated the field, taking half of the top ten finishes. In addition to Smith, sophomore Olivia Winn was fourth and sophomore Riley Morris was sixth. Senior Sayge Root was ninth and an additional freshman, Mattie Woodbury was tenth.

Union placed only a single runner in the top ten with senior Jaimee Baxter in the third position with a time of 19:27.3. The remainder of the Union squad finished high enough to propel the Bobcats to a trip to the state meet.

Just out of contention for a state trip was La Pine senior Olivia Flack in the seventh slot and Nyssa senior Olivia page in eighth.
