RENTON, WA. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Executive Board postponed action until Wednesday, January 6 after an announcement by Washington Governor Jay Inslee updated metrics for the resumption of high school athletics.
Meeting Wednesday, the board moved the traditional fall sports to Season 1, beginning with practices on Feb. 1 and ending on March 20. Season 1 will be seven weeks in duration. The ruling governs the following sports in Hermiston:
- Cross Country
- Slowpitch softball
- Girls soccer
- Girls swim and dive
“The change in guidelines allow all traditional fall sports to be played in Phase 2 while we still do not have a clear pathway to the high risk indoor activities of basketball, competitive cheer and dance, and wrestling” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “With that in mind, moving fall sports to Season 1 will hopefully provide the most opportunities to participate.”
The decision on other sports will be discussed during the January 19 meeting of the board.
The board also continued to allow leagues to reschedule seasons to best fit the community needs. The WIAA will continue to schedule regional events at the conclusion of the seasons.
