Hermiston sports delayed until February 1

RENTON – Hermiston athletes will need to wait a bit longer before competing after the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Executive Board announced a delay to the start of Season 2. The eastern Oregon school competes in Washington and is governed by the WIAA.

The board decided to start Season 2, traditional winter sports, with practices now starting February 1. Gymnastics can start practice January 25. Due to the delay, the board also shorten the season to seven weeks. Season 2 will now end March 20.

The delay also pushes Season 3 (traditional fall sports) to a start date of March 5. Season 4, traditional spring sports, will start practice on April 26.

According to information from the WIAA, the decision comes after “surging COVID-19 cases around the state, putting in jeopardy the ability to begin WIAA Season 2 which was scheduled to begin on December 28.”
