Hermiston, La Grande, Ontario And Nyssa Wrestlers Wrap Up Nationals

FARGO, ND – Competing for Team Oregon, female wrestlers from Hermiston, La Grande, Ontario and Nyssa made the trip to Fargo, North Dakota to take to the mats against the rest of the nation in the US Marine Corps USA Wrestling’s 16U and Junior National Championships.

The Bulldogs of Hermiston were represented by Elena Flores and Laura Meyers. Flores, wrestling in the 144-pound division of the Junior Women picked up a bye in the opening round of 128. In the round of 64, she lost in a 7-4 decision to Utah’s Kimberlynn Fowers and closed out her tournament with a tight 0-2 loss to California’s Hana Duus.

Meyers also competed in the Junior Women’s division, wrestling in the 152-pound class. Like her teammate, Meyers picked up a bye in the opening round before being unable to get by Alaska’s Ameila Fawcett in the round of 64, falling 0-4. Meyers’ tournament ended with a loss to Connecticut’s Brianna Seixas.

La Grande’s Kierstyn Azure took part in the 16U Women’s bracket, wrestling in the 100-pound class. Azure received a bye in the opening round before falling in round two to Minnesota’s Caley Graber. Azure then rebounded to down Connecticut’s Abby Pallatto and grabbed second victory by downing Carly Rodriguez of Texas. Azure’s tournament came to an end with a loss to Utah’s Payton Gines.

La Grande also saw Delia Gulzow wrestling in the Junior Women’s bracket at 127 pounds. After a bye in round one, Gulzow downed Madison Canales of the Texas squad. The Tiger experienced her first loss at the hands of Illinois’ Monica Griffin and closed out the tournament with a loss to Ohio’s Cassia Zammit.

 Ontario’s Hannah Hernandez took the mat in the 138-pound class of the Junior Women’s division. A bye in the first round pushed the Ontario Tiger to round two where she fell to Idaho’s Hallie Stone. Hernandez rebounded in the consolation bracket with a win over South Carlolina’s Tykala Pruitt and took a second victory in a match with Massachusetts’ Emily Angelo. Her tournament ended with a loss to Illinois’ Kinnley Smith.

Nyssa was represented by incoming freshman Kiera Deleon wrestling in the 127-pound division of the 16U Women’s classification. Deleon started the tournament with a bye and fell in round two to New Jersey’s Jada Pichardo. Her tournament ended with a loss to Iowa’s Lexa Rozevink.
