HANFORD – The track and field teams from Hermiston, La Grande, Pendleton and a few Irrigon participants traveled to Hanford on Saturday, March 29 for the 7th Annual Clay Lewis Invite.
Looking at the girls results, La Grande and Hermiston tied for fifth in the team standings, both with 64 points. Pendleton cracked the top 10 with a ninth place showing.
As seen last season and again early this season, the bulk of La Grande’s points came in the distance events with senior Cecilia Villagomez Edvalson and junior Brooke Perry trading first place showings. Villagomes Edvalson grabbed the top spot in the 1600 meters with Perry taking third. The duo switched in the 3200 meters with Perry crossing the tape first and Villagomez Edvalson taking third.
The duo joined forces with juniors Mattie Wolcott and Taryn Mcllmoil to run away from the test of the field in the distance medley relay, finishing in a time of 13 minutes, 9.47 seconds.
Hermiston also saw a championship as senior Avonlea Edwards’ throw of 119 feet, 3 inches in the discus was tops in the field. Fellow senior Madeline Jared picked up third in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 2.5 inches. The Bulldog sprinters also grabbed third as seniors Madeline Jared, Abigayl Dainity joined junior Darina Ortiz and sophomore Ave Courtney in the 4-by-100 relay for a time of 51.49 seconds.
Experience appeared to rule this meet as it was Pendleton senior Nicole Somnis adding to the Buckeroo point total after placing second in the javelin with a throw of 108 feet, 8 inches.
For the boys, Hermiston placed in the top five, taking fourth with 89 points. La Grande, with 35 points, finished eighth and Pendleton slid in at tenth.
Hermiston was led by a powerful showing in the 3200 meters led by champion and senior Jaysen Rodriguez and his time of 9:27.75. Just two spots back in third was teammate and freshman Leroy Lozano Mejia followed by sophomore Gabriel Anderson in fourth.
Senior Carter Cleveland finished up his day placing third in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches cleared.
La Grande sophomore Brogan Hedgepeth dominated the throwing events, winning both the discus and shot put events. His attempt in the shot put of 51 feet, 0.25 inches proved to be a new personal record for the Tiger. Hedgepeth won the discus after a measurement of 160 feet, 10 inches.
Personal records also fell for the Buckaroos as senior Carter Cary finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a new best personal time of 42.21 seconds. Junior John Thatcher also picked up third place after his time of 50.59 seconds in the 400 meters was a new personal record.
