WALLA WALLA – Facing teams representing Washington, Oregon and Idaho, the Hermiston girls’ cross country team returned home with the team championship as the Hawk Invite concluded Friday, Sept. 20 in Walla Walla.
The Bulldogs girls placed five runners in the top 10 finishes, led by junior Maggie Meenderinck’s third place finish with a time of 21 minutes, 14.58 seconds. Senior Lillian Fields was one spot back in fourth with a time of 21:25.59.
McLoughlin also claimed a top 10 runner as sophomore Milayla Bird placed tenth. Pendleton’s best finish came with sophomore Evelyn Hayes in 19th and Riverside saw senior Caelyn Pullen place 25th.
Running in his first 5,000-meter high school race, Hermiston freshman Leroy Lozano Mejia outdid the rest of the field for the top spot with a time of 16:27.75. The finish helped propel the Bulldog boys to a second place showing in the team standings.
Riverside junior Nathen Hammond picked up fourth place in the race as the top Pirate while MacHi’s top runner was junior Alfredo Hernandez in 55th. For the Buckaroos of Pendleton, junior Maliki Adams crossed the finish in 70 and for Bickleton, senior Joshua Gifford was 72nd.
