Hermiston Girls Down League XC Opponents

WALLA WALLA –  The cross country teams of the Mid-Columbia Conference, take note-the Hermiston girls are the squad to beat. The Bulldogs edged out Kennewick to grab the team title as the Mid-Columbia Conference teams met on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in Walla Walla.

The Hermiston girls finished the day with 47 point while Kennewick came in with 50 points. Kamiakian, with 87 points, was third.

As in past meets this season, the Bulldogs found their quickest time from sophomore Megan Joyce. Joyce ran the 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 26.43 seconds, a time quick enough for a fourth-place overall finish in the race. Senior Alexia Serna was just a couple spots back, placing sixth with a time of 19:44.30. Serna’s time in the race marked the first occasion this year she has posted a time under 20 minutes.

Directly behind Serna was freshman Elizabeth Newman in seventh and a time of 19:48.57. Newman also ran her first sub-20-minute race for the season.

The Hermiston boys placed third against the MCC competition behind second-place Hanford and title holder Kamiakin. The Bulldogs scored 87 points while Hanford had 46 and Kamiakin scored 29 points.

The top finishers for the Hermiston boys crossed the finish line in a grouping. Senior Miguel Duron placed 12th with a time of 16:48.66 followed by a 13th place finish by freshman Jaysen Rodriguez with a time of 16:49.16. Senior Logan Springstead was a part of the crowd in 14th, crossing the line in 16:53.89 and a 14th placement.

The times for all three runners were their best times of the season to date.
