Heppner wraps up perfect regular season

HEPPNER – With a 49-0 victory over Stanfield on Friday night before the home fans, the Heppner football team finished the regular season perfect at 9-0. The Mustangs are the lone 2A team in the state to not face defeat in the 2019 season.

Heppner used balanced scoring, putting points on the board in each of the quarters.

Mustang quarterback Jayden Wilson ended his night 5-for-9 for 170 yards and four scores. Kason Cimmyotti excited the home fans on a 50-yard catch and run for one of the scores while Evan Kollman also scored on a catch of 36 yards. Mason Lehman pulled in two catches, both for scores.

On the ground, Blake Wolters had two trips to the end zone on 10 carries, putting up 50 yards. Out of the pocket, Wilson had two carries for 60 yards and one score.

For the fifth time this season, the Mustang defense held their opponents to zero points. Jason Rae led the team with 13 tackles, five of those solo followed by Gavin Hanna-Robinson with 11 tackles. Wolters, in addition to his running duties, picked up nine tackles and Roy Collins had eight tackles.

Heppner had 368 yards of total offense and only picked up two penalties in the win.

Stanfield was held to a total of 129 total yards in the loss with quarterback Kaden Combe held to 21 yards passing, completing three passes on six attempts.

Enrique Arellano was the bulk of the Tiger offense, handling the ball 30 times for an even 100 yards.

Stanfield ends the season with a 5-3 overall record and a 2-2 Special District 6 record. With the season finished, the Tigers are the third-place team.

After taking the league title, the Mustangs now enter the fray for a state title with a third place ranking according to the Oregon School Activities Association. On Saturday, November 9, Heppner takes the field in the first round of the state tournament against Bandon at the Morrow County Fairgrounds. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Bandon enters the game as the second-place team from the 2A Special District 4 and a 5-4 overall record. The Tigers currently are ranked 14th in the standings after finishing the season on a four game win streak.
